Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China (CIA World Fact Book, 2008). Being a SAR, Hong Kong enjoys a “one country, two systems” formula whereas China’s communists policies will not be imposed to it except defence and foreign relations matters (CIA World Fact Book, 2008). This system is effective for the next 50 years, which started in 1997 (CIA World Fact Book, 2006).
According to Xiao et al (2002), the mid-year population of Hong Kong was approximately 6.5 million in 1997. The actual population growth rate between 1987 and 1997 was 1.5% per annum, and the latest projected growth rate for 1996-2016 is 1.3% per annum. The problem of Hong Kong, however, is the severe aging of its population. 15 to 64 years of age accounts to 72.2 percent of the population – a great gap to the 14.5 percent of the 0 to 14 years citizens (Xiao et al, 2002).
The legal system of Hong Kong is based on the English common law. By occupation, community and social services workers account for 18.8 percent. The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2003 somehow upset the Hong Kong economy, but “a boom in tourism from the mainland because of China's easing of travel restrictions, and a return of consumer confidence resulted in the resumption of strong growth from late 2003 through 2005” (CIA World Fact Book, 2008).

Informative Pet Site

Most of the people have their own pet like different breeds of dogs, cats and others. However, only few have enough knowledge on how to take good care of these pets. Me and my honie owns a labrador named wutwut. We really love to play with him every time. Since wutwut is a girl, honie wanted our dog to have her puppies. However, we hardly know how to take care of a labrador when she is pregnant so the first time was very difficult. Good thing there are sites that provides Pet Information and now with the help of these information, we are now waiting for wutwut to give birth to her very own puppies.

Hong Kong Tourism

Tourism is one of the recreational practices an individual undertakes. People who exercise tourism are called tourists. According to World Tourism (2005) due to the fact that tourism is now one of the most popular recreational activity of people all over the world, in the year 2004 around 763 million tourists arrive in various parts of the world. Tourism plays a vital and crucial role in the economy of any country because the income and profit that is being obtained by the utilisation of products and services of the tourists will generate taxes which can be levied to the government. In addition, tourism provides employment and aids in the development of the economy of the nation. According to Franklin (2000) tourism is not just a recreational and decorative activity but instead tourism correlates centrally to the modernity in numerous dimensions such as politics, moral, economical and technological.
In Hong Kong, tourism was regarded as one of the important sector of their economy. Actually, Hong Kong is one of the most popular destinations in the world and the tourism industry is one of the most important aspects in the economy of Hong Kong. According to the Tourism Commission of Hong Kong (2007) the industry held another record last 2006 in which more than 25 million tourists arrived in Hong Kong. In order to maintain the number of tourist arrivals in Hong Kong, the tourism department plans, develops, and audits the possible competitive destination.

Dry bulk business

Dry bulk business are subject to different changes because of some economic aspects include the issue of inflation. In addition, there also exist some aspects in which dry bulk freight rates are not continuous in a long period of time. It can be noticed that in the global market, the behaviour of the dry bulk freight shows it’s weakest during the summer season and will eventually increase during the autumn season. It has been observed that the dry bulk freight experiences great fluctuations over the summer and shows strong improvement during September and October. Accordingly, dry bulk shipping business can be considered as a highly cyclical industry. This indicates that there are some period that the shipping costs is extremely high and there are some instances in which their rates was extremely low. This trending largely depends on the season through which dry bulk goods are needed or demanded.

Buyer Behavior

Albers-Miller (1999) argued that consumer susceptibility to purchasing occurs when others are buying also. A buyer is less willing to buy illicit goods when they are alone, and therefore are less likely to face social pressure to deviate. A buyer is least willing to buy illicit goods when others are present and not buying. Consumers who are law abiding are obviously less willing to buy counterfeits. However, there are many who have few moral qualms about the purchase of pirated materials. Instead, they are able to rationalize their behavior and do not see their purchases of counterfeits as unethical. They do not think that there is harm and hurt to the original creator and innovators because losses could be covered by the high profit margin normally existing.

Copy-Protection Technologies

Numerous copy-protection technologies have been developed by the industry. The first generation solutions include voluntary adding of labels or holograms on copy-controlled CDs; compulsory adding of IFPI registered code numbers on all CD stampers to identify the producers (Billboard, 2002). Philips introduced the new ‘Video Water Marking System’ by adding an identifier to the video signal at the time of production or transmission, and detectors that can detect the ID from the video signal (Business Wire, 2001). Many entertainment companies use copy protection technologies to protect their films against theft. Some delivery systems for film including DVDs use the Content Scrambling System (MPAA, 1999), Philips Digimarc Watermarking Patents (Business Wire, 2001) and Label Mark Copy-Protected CDs (IFPI, 2004c; Masson, 2002).

Intellectual Property Rights

The 1986-94 Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations agreed that international trade rules for intellectual property rights were seen as a way to introduce more order and predictability, and to enable disputes to be settled more systematically. The WTO’s Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) narrows the gaps in the way these rights are prospected around the world, and brings them under common international rules. When there are trade disputes over intellectual property rights, the WTO’s dispute settlement is now available (WTO, 2002a, 2002b & 2002c). However, having intellectual property laws is not enough, they must be enforceable. This is covered in Part 3 of TRIPS. The agreement says governments have to ensure that the intellectual property rights can be enforced under their laws, and that the penalties for infringement are tough enough to deter further violations (WTO, 2004).

Commoditization and Price competition

Price competition is a hard competition for firms especially when considering the quality of products that needs to be produced. Thus, not only does the firms suffer but also the consumers. Because of lower prices of commodities, consumers tend to settle on cheaper priced commodities without considering the quality of the goods. As the cliché say, there is no such thing as free lunch and as the price of commodities lower; this takes its toll on the quality of the commodities. According to Hendersen and Petersen (2002), commoditization decreases the value of products in the mere sense of quality because competitions are based on price that is set to compromise the quality. Thus, it appears that there is no pure winner in commoditization because although it seems that consumers benefits from many suppliers, the reality is that consumers suffers from low quality commodities. An example of this is goods from China, which are much cheaper than other goods produced elsewhere, the “made in China” products seem to have been commoditized worldwide as it is exported in every parts of the world. However, there is the quick sense of knowing that products made in China have low quality yet these products heightens commoditization because of the cheap price tag.

Cost Cutting Project

Schools are undergoing many changes in Hong Kong. Due to the influence of various factors such as technology, population and economic challenges, schools are applying different strategies to cope and overcome present and future problems. The ABC College in Hong Kong is not an exception. Being a subsidized school of the Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB), the organization encouraged the school to apply a cost-saving strategy. In order to support various educational reforms, the school must employ a strategy that will limit school expenditures but not the quality of education.

Among other alternatives, the school opted to apply a strategy that will save them significant energy costs. In order to implement this alternative, the school developed a plan through project management effort. By utilizing the abilities of the different work teams, the school was able to plan and implement an energy-saving project. Through effective administrative leadership, the school management delegated project responsibilities and monitored its progress. In addition, administrative leadership skills allowed the administrators to settle project challenges such as communication and incompetence problems. At present, the energy-saving project is still applied at ABC College. Significant progress has been achieved since its implementation. However, the school must prepare itself to address future project concerns. Identification of these future problems in advance is then essential.

Factors Causing Commoditization

There are three common and general factors that cause commoditization: technology advancements, the inefficiency of patents, and the enduring reality of quality buying through price consideration (Jonash, 2000). Jonash (2000) provides an account of how these causes lead to commoditization.
First, technology advancements bring about the possibility of copying newly invented products. Take for example, piracy of music and movies in China in the form of compact discs and DVDs. Technological advancements make possible the production of music and movies in compact discs at lower prices. Mass production of such commodities is prevalent in Asia and this takes away the profit from the music and movie industry worldwide. Moreover, access to new products is also made possible by technological advancements. Consider the Internet where in a click of a mouse, information necessary to copy products is provided. Thus, anyone with access to advanced technologies could become competitor to the original developer of certain products thereby undergoing process of commoditization.

Commoditization

Commoditization (a.k.a. commodification), according to market theorists, is the “state of commodity” considered as an inevitable feature in all product markets (Applbaum, 2004, p. 52). Karl Marx, a well-known critique of capitalism, views commodity as a mediating feature of capitalism between concrete labor (social productivity, value of goods) and abstract labor (social relationship, exchange of goods) (Brown et al 2002, p. 11). Commodity in that sense is the goods and services exchanged in the capitalistic market. Marx called commoditization in terms of a social form, “commodity fetishism,” which is a social compulsion that is objective and natural (Brown et al 2002, p. 11). Thus, this is actually in line with the mentioned marketing theory of commoditization, viewed as an inevitable feature of a market.
In general, commodity is a generic product that consumers are not able to differentiate from different competitors (Heskett, 1975). However, not every goods exchanged in the market is called commodity. Doyle (2002) stated that newly invented products today could be tomorrow’s commodities. This means that commoditization is the state where products transform into a commodity given that several producers are producing the same type of products and intense competition of that single type of product is evident in the market. A very good example of commoditization is illustrated by Jonash (2000, p. 24) with the example of HP LaserJet printers, which was once a product exclusively distributed and produced by HP. Before commoditization, LaserJet printers have no competitions from the market and “the company was so fast to market that its sole competition was its own next wave of printers. Then Epson, Canon, and Lexmark caught up and joined the party…suddenly competition in PC printers…was based on price. That is commoditization (Jonash, 2000, p. 24).” Thus, LaserJet printers were transformed from a product into a commodity when other producers began to produce the same type of product. Commoditization brings about competitors in the market that when there are too many of them, price competition arises. Several studies provide different perspectives on the meaning and process of commoditization

Racial Disparity

Racial disparity pertains to the inequality observed in the treatment of people of different races. People different ethnic backgrounds becomes the basis for treatment from other people, we usually have situations of discrimination and unequal treatment.
The unequal treatment of people from different races roots the belief that society is constructed as a hierarchy. In the American hierarchy, the white race is considered the superior race, while the black people are considered the inferior ones. Today, discrimination among races should already be at its minimal. However, this is not the case.
In the United States, a country that is suppose to champion diversity, racial prejudice is blatantly evident in almost all fields—employment, healthcare, entertainment, arts and literature, and the judicial system. Many organizations and agencies have been sued and penalised because of blatantly discriminatory, exclusionary policies and practices.
The US judicial system is one area where discrimination is discernible. As of June 30, 1994, state and federal prisons in the US held slightly over a million inmates. Blacks constituted 46 percent of the total; Hispanics, 17 percent; whites, 35 percent; and other ethnic groups comprised the remaining 2 percent. The explosive growth of the nation's prison population exacerbates a problem that has long been associated with US prisons: unequal treatment of inmates based on race (Tracy 195).

Types of Internet Usage in Taiwan

Information and entertainment acquisitions are the well-known types of internet use. Its varied content is unimaginable with the diverse information available online contributed by people of different cultural background across different fields and disciplines. The Internet is the complete manifestation of the conglomeration of the concept of breath and depth in terms of the available information, entertainment, service, products, resources and links that it offers to the public in general. Its efficiency and its “user-friendly” feature make it the most widely used communication medium in the world.
The improvement made in the technology of the Internet made more and more people to use the World Wide Web. In Taiwan, the Internet has been known for various purposes. A survey by the government's Management Information Commission by H. Lai and D. P. Liang (1998) reported that by early 1998, more than two million people were Internet users in Taiwan. Their purposes for Internet use comprise mainly of: looking for information (89.6%), learning (53%), entertainment/chatting (47.8%), communicating (40.4%), and shopping (10.6%).
The breath of the uses of the Internet in Taiwan is manifested in the local environment in a variety of ways. Some of its uses apply in the context of the local government, business industries education and news. In the local government, the use of the Internet was highlighted in channeling the petitions and appeals of the citizens in the policies that govern them. According to Sheoi-po Lin (1981), long before the authoritarian regime started to democratize in the late 1980s, the central government of Taiwan and the TCG has set up different channels for citizens to appeal when they are wronged by certain measures or actions of the TCG that paved the way in the establishment of the Commission of Administrative Appeals. But although the government expanded channels for citizen complaints during that time, the citizens in general were not satisfied with the system (pp. 297-351). Further developments in the communication system between the government and the citizens were implemented. According to Don-Yun Chen, Naiyi Hsaio, and Tong-Yi Huang (2003), on October 12, 1995, Mayor Chen of Taipei launched an electronic mailbox called the "A-Bian Mailbox." It was the very first citizen-participation initiative in Taiwan's government agencies. The A-Bian Mailbox was first implemented in text-mode in an electronic Bulletin Board System (BBS), and was revised to a web-based edition in March 24, 1998. In November 2001, the Mayor's Box was still in operation and eventually, most bureau chiefs and deputy directors also have set up their own e-mail boxes for citizens to file complaints. In terms of media usage, about one-third of the complainants sent e-mails to the mayor, 11% sent e-mails to bureau chiefs or deputy directors. The growing use of Taipei City Mayor's e-mail box since its inception dating back to the second quarter of 1996 is worth noting as the City agencies have to respond to around 2600 e-mails a month, which has caused serious work overload since the first quarter of 2000 (pp. 525-527). The local governments of Taiwan extended the utilization of the Internet not just in addressing the concerns of the general public but also in the educational system of the country.

Domestic Violence

The family is the basic and the most influential social unit being the basic institution that shapes, nurtures, and quite possibly exasperates an individual more than any other social group. Families are complex systems. They can provide some of the most challenging situations providing the core avenues and essential channels to learn and acquire attitude and behaviour patterns of an individual in order to respond effectively and adapt to societal changes. Unfortunately, the family at present is being confronted with social issues and problems concerning violence.
According to Shipway (2004) domestic violence is defined as any hurtful or unwanted behaviour perpetrated upon an individual by an intimate or prior intimate which normally is characterized by physical, psychological and emotional abuse. Domestic violence is based on the victim-offender relationship in the form of marriage, family ties, romantic relationships or a former marriage. It includes violence and abuse within same-sex relationships, violence by women against men as well as violence and abuse perpetrated by one family member against another (Shipway, 2004).
However, studies show that most cases of domestic violence which occurred have been on women as well as children (Humphreys et al., 2000). As such, this proposed workshop will present analysis of the domestic violence, its impact to women and children and the proposed parent’s plans to avoid or eliminate domestic violence.

Indian removal Act of 1832

In March 1829, Andrew Jackson assumed the presidency and removed his political power behind the national policy of removal of Indians. Jackson defended his view and ideas by perceiving that Indian removal was the only way of saving Native Americans from extinction and loss. In 1830, after the long debate, the Congress of the US have passed the national Indian Removal Act, which gives authorisation for the president set up various districts and areas within the Indian Territory for the gathering of various of tribes and agreed for exchanging lands. The Indian removal act also include the provision of payment of insurance and reparation for the Indians and assist them in terms of resettlement, security in their new settlements, as well as a continuation of the superintendence and care which has been given to them. Part of the Indian Removal Act was the authorisation of $500,000 in order to pursue this act. Through this removal act has been dramatically accelerated (Wallace, 96).
Part of the removal act was the setting up of Treaty negotiators to work both in the East and the West for protecting the permission for the resettlement of the eastern individuals in Indian Territory. Treaty negotiators have also been accountable for convincing eastern tribes to conform to Indian removal. In 1838, the Cherokees started to travel their tragic Trail of Tears with the supervision and guide of General Winfield Scott with the federal army. The journey started three years after they have signed with the controversial Treaty of New Echota. Even if some of the groups like Seminoles did not agreed with the resettlement, most eastern tribes which are known as Civilized Tribes of the Southeast, had a very small option but to agree for what has been offered with them. The treaty which has been negotiated as the result of the War 1812 had already decreased the population of Native American of the Old Northwest. However some states like Illinois, Indiana and Ohio remained as a crucial region of operation for federal government officials who are accountable for propagating the Indian removal act provisions. In August 1831, the Treaty of Wapaghkonnetta has made Shawnees to give up the last of their lands in the state of Ohio as an exchange for 100,000 acres of land area in the Indian Territory. By the end of 1832, Wyandots and Ottawa Ohio had been able to agree to exchange t heir lands, which eliminated the states of Native American population. As a response to both the fear of native retaliation which has been inspired by the Black Hawk War of 1832 and the Indian Removal Act, both Illinois and Indiana has similarly dispersed Indians in the early 1830s. (Green, 113)
It is said that the Indian removal act has been strongly supported and advocated in the south, in which states were willing to be benefited on the lands inhabited by the so-called Five Civilize tribes. It can also be said that this act was considered as crucial and controversial. In theory, the Indian removal was known to be voluntary, its practice showed the opposite. The Indian removal Act has been accused of pressuring American Indian leads to sign the treaties of the removal. Most scholars, who observed the Removal Act, have noted that the passage of the act can be considered to be an inevitable removal of most Indians from the states. All in all, it can be concluded that the Indian removal Act, has paved the way for the unenthusiastic and often aggressive, emigration of American Indians to the West. In this act, it can be said that Jackson’s uncharacteristic belief of having a strong central federal government, have enabled him to ignore the ruling of the Supreme Court and decides on things even if it will affect thousands of Indians settling in the states.

Health promotion

An influence on the development of a new policy agenda for health promotion has been the rediscovery of the determinants or ‘root causes’ of excess morbidity and premature mortality which are external to individuals and provide the context for their behavior and actions. Several widely used models of health (Dahlgren & Whitehead, 1991; Labonte, 1998; Evans & Stoddart, 1994) illustrate the range of contextual factors, including the economic, psychosocial, cultural and physical environments, that shape overall population health and inequalities in health relating to socio-economic status, gender, age and other social positions.

Health promotion is increasingly characterized by working with key stakeholders or agents in decision making processes that affect outcomes (Springett, 2001), although the means of achieving collaborative practice are still not fully understood. Working with people and communities, ‘people-centered health promotion’ (Raeburn & Rootman, 1998) requires an ecological and holistic approach to health, one that can capture complex social phenomena (Springett, 2001).

Within health promotion, key principles of sustainability and community development are focused on. Health promotion approaches to justify the effectiveness of their practice and to demonstrate measurable outcomes. Internationally it has resulted in a number of initiatives, particularly in Europe, which aim to build an ‘evidence base’ for health promotion. Although in the process of the development of these initiatives there have been debates on what constitutes evidence in health promotion (McQueen, 2000; McQueen & Anderson, 2001) and the criteria by which evidence is defined have been subject to philosophical and theoretical scrutiny (Wiggers & Sanson-Fisher, 1998), there remains a danger that initiatives will encourage the very value systems they seek to challenge by buying into the notion of the existence of objective evidence.
